Interview with Deakin Vietnamese International Students of Geelong (DVISG) Club

Passion for culture.

This applies to the Deakin Vietnamese International Students of Geelong (DVISG) club at Deakin University.

Chloe Nguyen, the co-founder of DVISG and its 2025 President, will be speaking about her role and what it means to be part of the DVISG club.

What made you want to start the club and become the president?
It all started when I met Stacy, the 2024 President and co-founder, along with a few other students who shared a passion for celebrating our culture and supporting Vietnamese students at Deakin University. We came together, planned, and eventually started DVISG.

Initially, our main goal was to create a space where we could celebrate Vietnamese culture and share it with others. But over time, we realised we also wanted to help Vietnamese international students feel more connected to the wider Deakin student community.

Being part of it from the very beginning has been an incredible journey, and stepping into the role of president allows me to take that vision further. It gives me the opportunity to shape meaningful events, support students throughout their university experience, and give back to a community that has personally given me so much. It’s truly rewarding to see how the club has grown and continues to make a positive impact on students from all backgrounds.

What makes the club different from other clubs?
DVISG is more than just a cultural club—it’s a supportive community. While we celebrate Vietnamese culture, we also focus on helping students build friendships, develop skills, and feel included in the wider Deakin community. I think what really sets us apart is the balance we strike between social connection and cultural pride, creating a space where everyone feels welcome and supported.

Why should non-Vietnamese students consider joining the club?
DVISG is open to everyone! Non-Vietnamese students can join to learn about Vietnamese culture, take part in our events, and meet a diverse group of students. It’s a fun way to expand your cultural understanding, experience something new, and form meaningful friendships across different backgrounds.

What sort of events and programs do you offer at your club?
We host a wide range of events—from cultural celebrations like Tet (Festival of the First Day) and the Mid-Autumn Festival, to social mixers, workshops, and volunteer opportunities. Everything we do is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and enjoyable, giving students the chance to connect, learn, and celebrate together.

What is your message to those who want to join the club?
If you’re looking for a welcoming community where you can meet new friends, celebrate culture, and be part of exciting events, DVISG is the place for you! Everyone is welcome, and we would love to have you join us on this journey.
